What it does

Route planning for ground units is done by hand today. A planner weighs elevation, surface condition, vegetation and lines of sight to known threats, which takes 20 to 30 minutes per route and has to be repeated whenever the situation changes. Where satellite navigation is jammed or connectivity cannot be assumed, digital tools that depend on either one stop working.

Army-576 AI Route Planning moves the heavy analysis to a preparation step and leaves only the calculation on the device. The result is several scored route options in under three seconds, computed offline, with the decision left to the commander.

How it works

Preparation

A neural network extracts roads, tracks and their condition from satellite imagery. Land cover, elevation, slope and precomputed lines of sight are packed into a compact offline terrain package for the area of operations.

On the device

The user sets start, destination and movement type, and marks threat areas. The engine returns route options scored for exposure, terrain and traversability, and respects the physical limits of the selected vehicle. Nothing leaves the device.

Dismounted and mounted movement planning for ground units operating without reliable connectivity.

The routing component can be licensed to manufacturers of uncrewed ground vehicles and retrofit kits as an offline planner.

Search and rescue and wildland fire response face the same problem: incomplete maps, no connectivity, terrain that decides the route.
